Keep Warm - Keep Well
Keeping Warm this Winter.

Why keeping warm matters.

To keep well during winter, it's essential to keep warm. As the weather gets colder, we are all more likely to catch colds or flu; and if your body temperature drops then the risks of a heart attack, stroke or breathing difficulties increase. This is especially true for older people, or those who have a serious disease or are vulnerable due to a physical disability.
So the best way to combat winter is to keep warm and follow as healthy a lifestyle as possible. What you eat and drink, and the exercise you take, can make a big difference. And, as part of keeping well, it is vital to keep your home warm and keep yourself warm when you go out.

Refuse & Recycling Collections - Ongoing Severe Weather
As the bad weather continues, the Council’s Street Scene teams are finding it difficult to collect refuse and recycling in some areas of the Borough, particularly back lanes and untreated roads.

In our Ward the areas affected for refuse collection are from Middleton Lane down to Church Lane and all associated cul de sacs.

Recycling is also outstanding in some areas of Middleton St George/Middleton One Row.

Once the weather improves, normal collections will resume but until then residents are asked to take in any refuse or recycling that is not collected and put it back out when their next collection is due.

No Con Do: Scamnesty Targets Hoaxers
For the second year running, Darlington Council’s Trading Standards Team is running the Scamnesty initiative as part of national Scams Awareness Month, which runs throughout February.

Every year three million UK consumers fall victim to mail, e-mail, text and Internet scams but less than five per cent of victims report the crime.

As money worries increase during the credit crunch, it is feared even more people will fall for get rich quick scams

To try to crackdown on scams in Darlington, residents can drop any unsolicited mail, or other evidence of scams, into special bins at Crown Street Library, Cockerton Library, Town Hall reception, the Customer Contact Centre and the Public Protection Office at 11 Houndgate between Monday February 2 and Sunday February 15.

They will also be able to pick up information on avoiding future scams.

At the end of the month, all the evidence will be collected and action will be taken to help prevent other people being targeted.

During last year’s campaign, 139 mailings were dropped off by Darlington residents with the most common scams being phoney psychics, bogus letters claiming the recipient had won the Spanish lottery and fake health cures.

The total amount of fake winnings which residents were asked to claim was more than £78m.

As well as the Scamnesty, there will be a series of events during Scams Awareness Month, including Trading Standards officers running a stall at the outdoor market, to raise awareness of common scams and how to spot them.

For more information and advice call Trading Standards on (01325) 388799.

Speeding Problems in Killinghall Row - Middleton St George

We wish to update all residents in the vicinity of Killinghall Row on the progress that’s been made regarding the ongoing speeding problem which has been recently highlighted to us.

At a recent meeting with Darlington Borough Council Highways Department we requested that a speed monitor be installed in Killinghall Row to gauge the speed of all traffic over a seven day period. The Assistant Director of Highways has agreed to this and once the data is collected, depending on the outcome, it will be presented to Durham Constabulary with a view to enforcement in that area.

We must thank Mr Young for bringing this issue to our attention.

Should residents want to take this further, we will be pleased to discuss this with you at our Ward Surgery on Tuesday 28th October 2008 at 18.15hrs in the village school.

We will keep you informed of further updates as we get them.

Calor Village of the Year - 2008/2009
We were delighted to announce that MSG was chosen as the overall winner of the Calor Tees Valley Village of the Year 2008 and we attended the presentation evening in the Oakwood Centre, Eaglescliffe last Wednesday evening (1st October) to receive our prize of £500 and our village plaque.

We would like to thank the community centre members and the village youth club representatives who joined us on the evening which was hosted by Stewart McFarlane MBE.

The parish council and the community centre have agreed that the £500 winnings should be donated to the youth club members to help them provide equipment for the newly revamped youth club in the community centre basement.

The win means we have qualified for the regional competition and the work begins now on our entry which has to be submitted by the end of November and which will be followed by a presentation to the judges next March.

Sadberge won an 'Eco' award in the 'Special Achievemt awards' for the energy saving project carried out in the village with the Energy Saving Trust. Sadberge also received their prize for winning the Northern Region Competition 2007 and members are looking forward to visiting The Guildhall in London on 2nd December to see if they can win the national final. GOOD LUCK SADBERGE !

Parish Council Grants - Proposed Cuts
Darlington Borough Council are proposing to remove the Parish Council grants from the 2008/2009 financial year onwards. These grants are vital in maintaining the open spaces that the village currently enjoys. Open spaces like the Waterpark and the Playing Field. If the grant is removed by the Borough Council then each resident will have to pay an additional 92% on their precept to make up the shortfall.
Both Doris and Steve are against this proposal and are fighting to retain the grants in conjunction with the Parish Council.
If you want to voice your concerns against this proposed cut in Parish grants or any other budget issue then e-mail the following: budgetviews@darlington.gov.uk by Thursday 14th February 2008.

Talking Together Event - Record Numbers Attend
Our Talking Together event took place on Saturday 19th January 2008 at St Georges School in the village. The event saw a large number of village residents attend and voice their support to Middleton St George Parish Council in their battle to save the Parish Council grant it currently receives from the Borough Council. The grant is used towards vital village facilities such as the many open spaces the Parish Council own and maintain within the Parish.
Officers certainly took away a clear message that residents did not want to see this grant abolished.

Both Doris and Steve will continue to put pressure on the Borough Council to retain this very important grant into the future.

New Street Lighting in the Playground
Many residents voiced concern about young people gathering in the playground at night and being unable to be seen in the dark.

Ward councillors Doris Jones and Steve York worked with Darlington Borough Council and the parish council to have a new street light installed in the playground in order to illuminate the area.  This work was financed by the parish council and should go some way to reducing anti-social behaviour in the area.

The lamp standard will also be utilised to extend our Christmas lights.

Middleton St George Christmas Tree
The Christmas Tree lights will be switched on at 4pm on Sunday 9th December outside Mount Pleasant Bungalows (next to the playground).

Many people enjoyed our first Carol Concert last year, we learned a lot and hope that this year will be even better and that more residents will join us.

We have new, better and brighter lights and will once again be accompanied by Cockerton Silver Band.

The lights will be switched by the two oldest ladies in the village, (they have become quite famous since doing this for us last year).   The event is FREE and carol sheets will be provided so everyone can join in - you may wish to bring a torch.
Afterwards you can visit the Christmas Fair in the community centre where there will be a variety of stalls, selling seasonal gifts and refreshments.

Cederwood's "Cul de Sac" Sign
Cederwood has finally got its new "Cul de Sac" sign, which has been installed at the entrance to the estate. Its presence will hopefully reduce the number of motorists who drive in to Cederwood and wrongly assume it links with the adjacent estate of Westacres.

High Stell Bus Shelter
Many of you will be familiar with the condition of the bus shelter at High Stell and the problems caused by young people congregating there. Despite constant efforts to keep it clean it continues to be used for anti-social behaviour and is more often than not in a mess. Sadly, bus passengers are unable to use the seat or stand inside the shelter because of litter and a permanent foul smell.

We know that Darlington Council has not adopted this shelter since High Stell was completed and is therefore still owned by the developer Miller Homes. As ward councillors we met with residents, police and Miller Homes to request that the bus shelter be demolished and replaced with a more suitable canopy style shelter sited at the edge of the pavement to enable bus passengers to keep dry when waiting for the bus. This type of shelter will deter it from being used as a youth club and drinking den for anti-social youths who were causing the problem.

At the moment we are still negotiating with Miller Homes, and will keep you informed about progress.

Road Markings - Station Road & Heathfield Park Junction
The new road markings, including parking bays for residents in Station Road and a new junction layout at the entrance of Heathfield Park have now been completed. As it was not possible to "build out" the existing junction line because of advice from Highways and the Police the new markings are seen as a compromise which will hopefully give some visibility improvements to residents exiting the estate.

If you have any feedback on the new layout arrangements please pass it to either of us and we will ensure it gets to the relevant Authority.
