Withdrawal of Parish Grants
|
Darlington Borough Council has proposed the withdrawal of all parish grants from 2013/2014. If approved, this proposal will result in Middleton St George Parish Council losing £12,966.00 and Low Dinsdale Parish Council almost £1,000.
The grants are used towards the provision and maintenance of village facilities such as the water park, the children's playground, a litter collector and grass cutting. To replace this amount the parish would need to increase the precept by 65%, or £9-14 per annum for a band D house. This may sound like a small amount to some residents but in principle it is Double Taxation to residents who live in rural areas because we also contribute to all of those services in the town urban wards through our DBC council tax.
In addition, bus services will be affected from January 2nd 2011. Please see below:-
MSG and Middleton One Row will be served by a revised commercial service 12/12a every 30 minutes during the day.
Service 12 will also operate commercially on Sunday every 60 minutes. There will no longer be an evening service and service to the airport will be reduced.
A map is available to view in all parish council notice boards.

Flu Jab Awareness
|
Summer is now over and it is that time of year again when we start to prepare for the upcoming winter. This will include taking steps to protect our health over winter and for many of us this will mean thinking about how we prepare for ‘Flu.
For the majority of people, flu is simply unpleasant. But for some people flu is much more serious and can lead to serious complications such as bacterial chest infections, pneumonia and breathing difficulties which can be fatal. Last year over 600 people in the UK died with flu, and each winter it contributes to the deaths of around 8,000 people.
As part of your preparations for the winter this year, just check to see if you, or anyone you know, should have the flu jab.
If you think that you require a flu vaccine but don’t seem to have had an invite, then contact your own GP who will be able to advise you.
For more information about flu, its symptoms and the vaccine, visit NHS choices website at:-
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Flu/Pages/Introduction.aspx
or speak to your GP or any other health professional.

Darlington Markets
|
FREE Market Stall
Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Morrisons all started out as market stalls and are now hugely successful businesses. Markets are therefore a fantastic testing ground for a budding entrepreneur with a bright idea but a limited budget.
Clearly not every market stall will end up as a multi-million pound industry. But markets can be huge contributors to the local economy and central to the vitality of the town centre and regeneration of the wider area.
Darlington Markets offer local business start-ups the opportunity (as a one off) to have a stall on a Monday on the Outdoor Market completely FREE of charge, to help promote and showcase their business and also to reach a new customer base.
A fully weather proof gazebo (measuring 3m. sq.) can be provided, together with tables and lighting/power if required. Businesses can book an available stall and stock up with an attractive display. Businesses may not want to sell anything but just use it as an advertising medium handing out literature, leaflets or business cards. The inclusion will make Darlington Market more diverse and prove that it is also a community facility that is accessible to all.
Once you’ve had a taste of trading at Darlington Markets for FREE, there is an opportunity to sign up for a series of non contractual stall hire for £20 a day on a Monday. Established businesses are all entitled to this opportunity. It can be a very cheap way to reach a new customer base. Why not dress up the stall and advertise your business, getting your brand seen is an ideal way to do this.
If you are a new or established business wanting to take up this offer, please contact Emma Waring on 01325 388 207 or e-mail: emma.waring@darlington.gov.uk

Darlington Health & Energy-Affordability Team (HE-AT)
|
HE-AT project based at Age UK Darlington.
The project has been brought together as a cross sector initiative to participate meaningfully in tackling fuel poverty by pooling expertise and improving access to advice and assistance. The service works in partnership with Darlington Borough Council, NHS Darlington, Darlington Citizens Advice Bureau, Energy Saving Trust and other interested organisations.
It is estimated that three million households are exposed to the effects of fuel poverty and this is particularly prevalent within the North-East. Too many people cannot afford to keep adequately warm at a reasonable cost due to a combination of rising fuel costs, low income and poorly insulated homes and inadequate heating systems.
HE-AT offers all households in the Borough of Darlington free, confidential quality assured advice on a range of fuel and energy related issues including fuel debt; disconnection of energy supply; tariff switching, energy efficiency improvements and energy saving measures as well seeking to maximise household income. The service is available to home owners and to private, council and housing association tenants and is not restricted by age.

The New Recycling Service
|
The new recycling service will see the return of cardboard recycling using the existing blue bags along with waste paper. Green boxes will be used for waste glass only and not for tin cans as in the existing system. Tin cans and other household waste will all go into black sacks.
Waste from blue bags and green boxes will continue to be collected fortnightly and black sacks will be collected weekly. New recycling dates up until January 2011 are included in a leaflet which will be issued shortly. The new system will see Darlington’s recycling figures double from more than 25% to more than 50% as all of the recyclable waste from black sacks, including metals, plastics, drinks cans and milk cartons, will be recycled using a new process rather than going to landfill.
The new service will operate from Monday September 7th 2009, immediately after the Bank Holiday collections.
Further information is also available on the website: www.darlington.gov.uk/makingwastework or by calling (01325) 388777.

Middleton St George Highways - Update
|
Many residents joined the Ward Councillors Doris Jones and Steve York on Saturday 11th July in raising concerns to the Borough Council Highways Department about the changes to the road system around various locations within the village including, Neasham Road, Middleton Lane and The Square.
Furthermore, both Doris & Steve delivered questionnaires to every house in the Ward and over 200 responses were received by the Highways Department along with the many voiced concerns on the day. The hard work has paid off as the chicanes outside the school have now been removed and replaced with speed cushions.

PACT within the Middleton St George Community
|
The Police in Darlington have adopted a new way of working with communities, its called PACT (Partners & Communities Together)and it has been launched to enable communities to have better contact with their local beat officer and community support officer (PCSO).
The PACT meeting provides an opportunity to meet with officers on a monthly basis to discuss any local issues and to come up with some solutions/priorities to help solve those issues. The Police and their partners will then work to address the issues highlighted, reporting progress at the next meeting.
